Cost:     £4.50 (£4 concessions) for canal boat trip into Standedge tunnel

We shall walk along the tow path to the Canal heritage centre, newly refurbished for 2011, the 200th anniversary year of the Huddersfield Narrow Canal. This will take about 15 minutes. There is a regular water taxi for those who prefer not to walk. We shall explore the canal history and then take the boat into the canal where a guide will talk to us about the building of this, the longest, highest and deepest tunnel in England and point out surviving artefacts.

It is possible to obtain refreshments at the canal basin. Afterwards I suggest a visit to the National Trust Centre by the train station which has an exhibition about the Marsden estate and how the moorland is managed. Marsden itself is a pretty village with teashops, pubs and craft shops.
