The Thoresby Society

The Historical Society for Leeds and District
Founded 1889



 

The Thoresby Society is named after Ralph Thoresby (1658-1725), the first historian of the town.

What are its aims?

The Society seeks to :-

promote interest in and to encourage research into the history of Leeds and its neighbourhood.
collect and make available books, documents and other material for this purpose.
publish annually relevant articles, monographs and documents covering a wide range of topics. Recent titles include East End, West End: the face of Leeds during urbanisation, 1684-1842 and Kirkstall Abbey, 1147-1535: an historical study. Where is it located?

The Society's Headquarters and Library are housed at Claremont, 23, Clarendon Road, Leeds LS2 9NZ.

Library
The normal opening hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 2pm.
The library will also be open on Members’ Evening at 6pm. when a sale of surplus items will take place.

What are the benefits of Membership?

Membership of the Society entitles you to:-

free admission to evening lectures.
use the Library, with its extensive collection of books, old newspapers, maps, pictures and related materials. Our vast collection of books includes directories of Leeds, biographies of Leeds' people and a wide selection of 18th and 19th century newspapers.
receive the annual publication of the Society free of charge.
visit places of historical interest in the Leeds district.

When and where are lectures held?

Lectures are usually held in the spacious and comfortable surroundings of the Friends' Meeting House, Woodhouse Lane, on the corner of St. Mark's Road.

Meetings are generally on Tuesdays and commence at 7.15pm.

How much does it cost to join?

The annual subscriptions are:-

Full time Students £20  
Life Member £400
