Preface

This Volume contains the Registers of the Chapelries of Holbeck, Armley, and Hunslet, copied from and examined with the original
books there, to the year 1812, and completes all the Registers of the Chapels of the Leeds Parish Church contained in three of the
Society’s publications, namely, Volumes XXIII, XXIX, and XXXI.
Earlier registers of Armley, 1665 to 1711, and of Hunslet, 1686 to 1724, appeared in Volume XIII; and of Armley, Holbeck, and
fiunsiet, 1724 to 1763, in Volume XXIII.

Unfortunately the original transcribers in the Vestry of the Parish Church are dead, except one, and no one now has volunteered to succeed them.

The editor copied the Holbeck Register in this Volume and was much assisted by his clerk, Mr. H. G. Myers, with the Registers of Armley and Hunslet. The copyists’ names at the Parish Church are stated in the prefaces to each of the Volumes. The transcription commenced in 1889, when the Society was formed, and probably more entries have been printed than of any other register.

The Chapelries volumes at the Parish Church were copied from the annual returns sent in by the chapel officials, and are deficient in many entries contained in the books at the chapels, and they are deficient in a few entries in the church registers.

The thanks of the Society are due to the late Rev. W. J. Smith, vicar of Holbeck, the Rev. H. St. J. Stirling Woollcombe, vicar of Armley, now Bishop of Whitby, and the Revs. C. Gallacher and D. S. Mould, vicars of Hunslet, for kindly allowing their registers to be copied and printed.

My friend, Mr. Jesse Andrews Myers, has again kindly undertaken the laborious preparation of a very large index of Christian and surnames and of places. It is the seventh prepared by him for the Society, and their and my grateful and special thanks are due to him.
