Leeds History Maps
The nine maps in this section highlight the evolution of the form of Leeds from the middle ages to the present day.
Over 600 maps and plans of Leeds and surroundings, from the 16th century onwards, some photocopies but mainly original sheets, including some unique/rare private estate plans. The catalogue is in date order and contains brief details of the area covered, any personal names, and the name of the surveyor.
You can also find an index to the OS Town Plan of Leeds 1890/91, and information on OS maps of Leeds in the collection.
A complete list of the maps and plans held by the Society seen below is open to members of the public to view, as are a selection of early ‘Leeds History Maps’. Images of other maps in the collection which we have scanned are available in the Members Area.

As the local history society for Leeds, the Thoresby Society has concentrated its map collection on Leeds and the West Riding of Yorkshire.
The Index of Maps and Plans is a comprehensive list of all the maps and plans in the Society’s collection. Also there is a searchable index of the 138 sheets of the 1888- 1890 Ordnance Survey Town Plan of Leeds held by The Leeds Library.
The City of Leeds Slum Clearance: Represented areas 1954 – 1985
Over more than a century, the Society has built up a number of special collections, notably its archive, map and image collections, which have recently been re-catalogued to make them more accessible. These collections are housed in the Society’s library, based at the Leeds Library, 18 Commercial Street, Leeds LS1 6AL.
